There are some easy ways to prevant infection.
Do a virus scan when you mount your drive.
Never double click your removable drive icon, cancle your auto play and use Right click-->Explore to open your drive.
Use a firewall, So if your system get infected you'll get a warning from your firewall when the virus try to connect to the Internet.
